A single facility-wide program misses the fact that risk is not evenly distributed. Here is what drives pressure zone by zone, and what typically shows up in each.
Cafeteria & food service areas
The same pressures as any commercial kitchen, operating inside a building with a much larger and less predictable daily population passing through it.
Classrooms & shared learning spaces
Low pest pressure under normal conditions, but the zone with the least tolerance for chemical treatment given constant child occupancy and the difficulty of scheduling around a full academic day.
Gymnasiums & locker rooms
Heavy foot traffic, shared equipment storage and, in older schools, humidity from showers — conditions that favour silverfish and, less often, cockroaches in adjoining mechanical spaces.
Portable classrooms & older wings
Ageing structures and portable units frequently have weaker building envelopes than a school's main block, with more gaps at grade level and around service penetrations.
Grounds & playground perimeter
Outdoor pressure has to be managed with the same low-toxicity standard as any child-occupied space, and wasp nests near play structures are a genuine safety concern rather than a nuisance.

Manitoba Health Protection Unit facility pest standards
The same WHO-derived urban pest list and prevention standard that applies to care facilities and dwellings across the province governs schools as buildings occupied by the public.
How this shows up in your file: Treatments and findings map to that list by name, giving the school's facilities team documentation consistent with the provincial standard rather than a generic service log.
Low-toxicity standard for child-occupied space
There's no meaningful difference, in practice, between the caution a licensed daycare requires and what a responsible operator applies in a school — the population is younger and more vulnerable than almost any other commercial site.
How this shows up in your file: Non-chemical and mechanical methods are the default in classrooms and common areas. Where a product is genuinely necessary, it's chosen and documented with that higher bar in mind, and scheduled outside instructional hours.
PMRA-registered product requirement
As with every site on this list, any product used must carry PMRA registration under the Pest Control Products Act — a baseline that matters more, not less, in a building full of children.

Food service areas get the same inspection rigor as a standalone restaurant, since the underlying pressures — and the underlying health stakes — are identical.
Playground and grounds safety review
Wasp and ground-nest inspection ahead of peak outdoor season, timed to catch nests while they're still small and before a schoolyard is in daily use.
Rapid response for occupied-space findings
A sighting in a classroom or cafeteria during the school day gets a same-day response plan, even where the physical treatment has to wait for an appropriate window.
Seasonal pattern. Wasp pressure on school grounds peaks in the same August-into-September window as anywhere else in the city — directly overlapping the start of the school year. Rodent pressure in older wings and portables rises from autumn as outdoor populations seek heated structures.
Audits are won on documentation, not on the absence of pests. An inspector expects to see a device map, a trend, and evidence that findings were closed out. A clean building with no records fails; a building with a live finding and a documented corrective action usually does not.
