Why we treat it this way

Why finding moisture matters more than finding ants

Carpenter ants excavate damp or decayed wood — they do not attack sound, dry lumber. A carpenter ant problem is very often a moisture problem wearing an insect costume: a leaking roof-wall junction, a failed window seal, a chronically damp sill plate. Treating the ants without addressing the water means treating again next year.

Why we bait rather than spray the trail

The visible workers are a fraction of the colony, and killing them does not touch the queen or the brood. Slow-acting bait carried back through the nest is what reaches the individuals that matter.

Why satellite nests complicate the job

Mature colonies operate a parent nest, usually outdoors in a stump or tree, plus satellite nests indoors holding older brood and workers. Treating the indoor satellite alone leaves the parent colony intact to re-establish it.

Spraying visible trails with a repellent product

Breaks the trail without reaching the nest, and repellency can cause the colony to split and relocate — turning one nest into two harder-to-find ones.

Assuming sawdust means termites

Carpenter ants leave clean frass containing insect body parts; they do not eat wood, they discard it. Manitoba has no established termite problem, and the two require completely different treatment.

Fixing the ants and not the leak

The most expensive version of this problem is the one treated three years running while a small roof leak keeps the sill plate damp.
