Cockroach control in Winnipeg

German, brown-banded and Oriental cockroaches all establish readily in Winnipeg buildings. Treatment is gel bait plus a residual application, with a follow-up included.

The problem

What you're dealing with

German cockroaches are the species behind most Winnipeg infestations. A single female carries an egg case holding roughly 30–40 eggs and can produce several in her lifetime, which is why a small sighting becomes a large problem inside a few months.

They travel between units through wall voids, plumbing chases and shared services, so an infestation in a multi-unit building is rarely confined to the suite that reported it. They also carry pathogens across surfaces and their shed cuticles are a recognised indoor asthma trigger.

Confirm it

Signs to look for

  • Live insects when a light is switched on at night
  • Dark specks of frass around hinges, in drawer runners and behind appliances
  • A distinct musty odour in heavy infestations
  • Egg cases glued into cracks near warmth or moisture
Our method

How we treat it

  1. 01Full inspection of harbourage: appliance motors, cabinet voids, plumbing penetrations and electrical boxes
  2. 02Gel bait placed directly into harbourage so insects carry the active back to the nest
  3. 03Residual application to travel routes and voids where it will not contact food surfaces
  4. 04Insect growth regulator where reproduction needs to be broken, not just adults killed
  5. 05Follow-up visit to confirm the population has collapsed rather than relocated
Before we arrive

How to prepare

  • Empty and wipe cabinets we will treat
  • Clear the floor around and under appliances
  • Store open food in sealed containers
  • Do not spray retail aerosols before we arrive — it scatters the population and makes bait less effective
Afterwards

What to expect

  • Visit oneInspection, then treatment of every harbourage area we find. You get a written record of what was applied and where.
  • The days afterMost treated populations collapse over 2–3 weeks as bait moves through the colony. Heavy or building-wide infestations need a staged program.
  • Follow-upIncluded in the price — we confirm the result rather than assume it.
The reasoning

Why we treat it this way

Why gel bait instead of spraying

A German cockroach population lives inside voids you cannot reach — appliance motors, cabinet corners, the space behind a dishwasher. Spraying kills what is exposed, which is a small minority, and drives the rest deeper. Gel bait works because the insects carry the active back into harbourage and pass it on through faeces and cannibalism, reaching individuals no spray ever contacts.

Why an insect growth regulator matters

Killing adults does not end an infestation, because the egg cases are already laid and insecticide does not reliably penetrate them. An IGR means the nymphs that hatch from surviving oothecae never reach reproductive maturity — it closes the loop that otherwise restarts the whole cycle in six weeks.

Why we inspect before we treat

Placement is the entire job with baiting. A gram of bait in the right void outperforms a litre of product in the wrong place, and the only way to find the right void is to look — inside motor housings, under sinks, behind cover plates.

Avoid these

What makes it worse

These are the things we most often arrive to find already done. None of them are unreasonable instincts — they just backfire for reasons that are not obvious.

Spraying a store-bought aerosol first

The most common and most expensive mistake. Repellent aerosols scatter the population into adjacent voids and neighbouring units, turning one room into several. It also contaminates the surfaces where bait needs to go, so professional treatment afterwards works more slowly.

Setting off a total-release fogger

Foggers deposit product on open surfaces and almost nothing in the voids where cockroaches actually live. The population survives, disperses, and the residue interferes with baiting.

Stopping treatment when sightings stop

Sightings drop long before the population is gone. Skipping the follow-up leaves the surviving oothecae to hatch, and the problem returns in four to eight weeks looking like a new infestation.

In Winnipeg specifically

What's different here

German cockroaches cannot survive a Manitoba winter outdoors — they exist here entirely inside heated buildings, which means every infestation was carried in. In multi-unit buildings they travel through shared wall voids and plumbing chases, so a suite-only treatment in an apartment block frequently fails through no fault of the product.

Realistic expectations

What actually happens, week by week

Days 1–3
Sharp visible increase as bait draws insects out of harbourage. This looks alarming and is actually the treatment working.
Weeks 1–2
Numbers fall steeply. Most of the foraging adult population is gone.
Weeks 4–8
Surviving egg cases hatch. The follow-up visit and the IGR are what stop this becoming a second infestation.
Week 8+
Resolution confirmed by monitor counts rather than by absence of sightings.

Questions

Common questions

Do I have to throw out food or dishes?

No. We do not treat food-contact surfaces. Sealing open packaging is enough.

Will one visit be enough?

For a contained residential infestation, usually. The included follow-up is how we confirm it rather than assume it.

Is it safe with pets in the house?

Products are PMRA-registered and applied to voids and cracks, not open floor. We will tell you which rooms to keep pets out of and for how long.
