Pharaoh ants are polygyne: a colony contains many queens. When the colony is stressed by a repellent spray it buds, splitting into multiple new colonies in new locations. A spray treatment reliably turns one problem into several.
They are a significant concern in healthcare and food premises because they are small enough to enter sealed packaging and sterile supplies, and they are strongly attracted to wound exudate and IV lines.

Why spraying is the one thing that must not happen
Pharaoh ant colonies respond to chemical stress by budding: queens and workers split off and establish new satellite colonies elsewhere in the building. A repellent spray does not kill a pharaoh ant colony — it multiplies it. One kitchen problem becomes four, in walls, behind cabinetry and in adjoining suites.
Why bait-only takes longer and is still correct
Slow-acting bait is carried back and shared through the colony by trophallaxis, reaching multiple queens that no spray ever contacts. It feels slower than a visible knockdown because it is — and it is the only approach that actually eliminates rather than scatters.
Why we may bait for several weeks
Multi-queen colonies with continuous brood production do not collapse in one round. Sustained bait availability over six to ten weeks is what carries the active through every queen and every brood batch.
