Pavement ants in Winnipeg: sidewalk wars, slab nests and why baits work
They nest under your driveway, forage less than 30 metres from home, and stage mass territorial battles on the sidewalk every spring. Unlike pharaoh ants, they respond well to bait — provided you don't spray the trail first.

What we're dealing with
Pavement ants are small dark ants, roughly 2.5–4 mm, that nest beneath slabs, driveways, patios and sidewalks and forage indoors through cracks and expansion joints. Their common name comes directly from that habit — colonies located beside or beneath sidewalks.1
The taxonomy is genuinely unsettled, and it is worth being honest about that. Most ant resources refer to pavement ants as a species complex rather than a single species,1 and the name has historically been applied loosely to Tetramorium caespitum. The species widespread in North American urban environments is now generally identified as Tetramorium immigrans, native to Europe and introduced here,2 which hybridises with T. caespitum.3 Older references — and a great deal of the internet — still say caespitum.
Identification features: dark brown to black, with fine parallel grooves on the head and thorax, two waist nodes, and a pair of small spines on the rear of the thorax. Like other hymenopteran stinging insects, pavement ants have stingers that are modified ovipositors,1 though they very rarely sting people in practice.
The good news, stated plainly Unlike pharaoh ants, pavement ants respond well to conventional baiting. Baits can be very effective in eliminating colonies within structures.3 Workers carry the bait back to the colony and share it with the brood and the queen.2 This is a solvable problem, and it does not require a multi-week program.
Life stages and cycle length
Pavement ants are holometabolous — egg, larva, pupa, adult — with development driven by soil temperature. In Manitoba the cycle is firmly seasonal, unlike the year-round indoor pharaoh ant.
Colony wakes

The seasonality is genuinely useful. A pavement ant problem has a beginning and an end each year, and treatment timed to spring emergence — when colonies are active but populations have not yet peaked — does more work than the same treatment in August.
Colonies are typically headed by a single queen and reach several thousand workers, which is a fraction of a mature carpenter ant colony and orders of magnitude below a pharaoh ant colony. That matters: there is one queen to reach, and bait can reach her.
Nesting and foraging
Nests are frequently located under building foundations, with workers foraging for food inside.3 In nature, colonies are often found nesting in soil under stones.3 In a Winnipeg property that translates directly to:
- Beneath driveways, sidewalks, patios and garage slabs
- Along the foundation edge, under the parging line
- Under stepping stones, retaining walls and landscape edging
- Beneath slab-on-grade floors, entering through expansion joints and utility penetrations
- Under exterior steps and porch pads
The diagnostic sign is unmistakable: mounds of loose soil particles emerging from sidewalk cracks or expansion joints are often the work of pavement ants.1 That excavated soil is coming up from the nest below and is not damage to the concrete — a point worth making, because homeowners frequently assume the ants are undermining the slab. They are not.
They scavenge a wide variety of food including bread crumbs and other detritus in kitchens, live and dead insects, aphid honeydew and grease.1 Outdoors, the eastern subterranean termite is a common prey item.3 Indoors they are drawn most reliably to grease and to pet food.
Foraging range is short. Workers have been observed not to travel more than 30 metres from the nest, staying closer to home than many ant species.4 That is diagnostically valuable: if you have pavement ants in your kitchen, the nest is on your property or your immediate neighbour's — not somewhere down the block.
Behaviour and navigation
Pavement ants forage both day and night and recruit heavily to a discovered food source. Once a food source is located, mass recruitment occurs along a well-defined odour trail.3
The trail mechanism is worth understanding because it is what bait exploits. When foraging, workers lay a chemical trail by wiping their gasters on the ground as they walk, allowing others to follow the trail to food and find their way back without getting lost.4 When ants are searching indoors for resources they leave pheromone trails so nestmates can locate the food.2
They also use a second navigation system: in addition to pheromones, pavement ants use polarised light to navigate and guide their paths.4 This is a genuinely sophisticated capability in an insect a few millimetres long — it means they are reading sky polarisation patterns to maintain a bearing, independent of the chemical trail.
Practical consequence: destroying a trail with a cleaning product or a repellent spray disrupts recruitment temporarily, but the colony re-establishes because it can navigate back without the trail. All you have achieved is preventing bait from travelling.
Where in Winnipeg
Pavement ants are among the most evenly distributed pests in this city, because their habitat requirement is concrete — and Winnipeg has a great deal of it.
- Any property with a driveway, sidewalk, patio or garage slab. That is the habitat. Older suburbs, newer suburbs and inner-city lots are all affected roughly equally.
- Slab-on-grade construction — attached garages, additions, sunrooms and some newer builds — where the ants nest directly beneath the floor and enter through expansion joints.
- Properties with extensive hardscaping, paving stones, retaining walls and landscape edging, all of which multiply the available nest sites.
- Boulevards and back lanes, where the sidewalk-and-soil interface runs continuously for blocks and supports many adjacent colonies — hence the spring battles.
- Freeze–thaw damaged concrete. Winnipeg's cycling opens cracks and expansion joints every year, creating new nest entries and new indoor access points. This is a genuinely local factor.
Seasonally, calls begin with spring thaw, peak from May through July, and stop with the first hard frosts. Winter sightings almost always trace to a colony under a heated slab, most often an attached garage.
Natural control factors
- Winter. Colonies survive by moving below the frost line, which in this city is deep. Manitoba winters suppress activity for months but do not eliminate colonies.
- Intercolony competition. Genuinely significant. The territorial wars34 limit colony density along a given stretch of pavement, and colonies fight until death or injury.4 Neighbouring colonies do meaningful population control on one another.
- Predation. Birds take foraging workers and swarmers. Spiders and other predatory arthropods take individuals. Neither controls a colony.
- They are also predators. Pavement ants prey on other insects including subterranean termites,3 and consume aphid honeydew and detritus.1 A colony under a driveway well away from the house is doing more good than harm.
Worth saying: pavement ants cause no structural damage. They do not tunnel wood, do not undermine concrete, and do not transmit disease. This is a nuisance pest, and if the trail is not entering your home, the honest recommendation is frequently to leave the colony alone.
DIY: what works, what backfires
Sweet liquid baits containing boric acid. These small invasions can be managed with baits readily available in supermarkets and garden stores — workers carry the bait back and share it with the brood and queen.2 One of the few DIY ant products we actively endorse.
Spraying the trail. Repellent insecticides isolate the colony and make bait stations less effective.2 If you are baiting, do not spray anywhere near the trail.
Sanitation and sealed storage. Store food in containers with tight lids and clean crumbs and residue from cupboards, corners and surfaces — this discourages ants from venturing indoors and establishing.2
Attacking the soil mounds. Sweeping or hosing the excavated soil at a sidewalk crack removes the sign, not the nest. The colony rebuilds the mound within days.
Bait indoors, non-repellent outdoors. Where you have problems both inside and out, use bait stations indoors and non-repellent insecticides outdoors.2 Non-repellent, non-residual products act slowly and do not interrupt foraging or trails.2
Panicking about a sidewalk battle. Two colonies fighting over a boundary is a spring event, not an infestation. It resolves itself.
Our treatment process
- Locate the nest entries. We walk the slab, driveway, walkway and foundation perimeter looking for soil mounding at cracks and joints, and follow interior trails back to their entry point.
- Confirm the species. Pavement ants and pharaoh ants call for opposite treatments, so this is checked before anything is applied.
- Bait at active trail points, so the active reaches the nest and the queen rather than killing foragers on the counter.
- Non-repellent perimeter treatment at the foundation and slab entry points — chosen specifically so it does not interrupt foraging behaviour or pheromone trails and undermine the bait.2
- Crack-and-crevice application at interior entry routes.
- Follow-up to confirm the nest is dealt with rather than the trail merely relocated.
- Written notes on entry points and hardscaping, including which cracks are worth sealing — after treatment, not before.
Pricing is quoted on inspection because the cost tracks how much slab and foundation perimeter is involved. A single interior trail from one driveway crack is a different job from a property with three colonies under extensive hardscaping.

The strategic point is the interaction. Repellent insecticides are good for direct nest drenches or quickly stopping ants entering a structure, but they isolate the colony and make bait stations less effective.2 Non-repellent, non-residual insecticides act slowly and do not interrupt foraging behaviour or pheromone trails.2
So the decision is made up front: either you are drenching a located nest, or you are baiting. Doing both in the same place cancels out the second.

Ant wars and decision-making research
How a colony decides to fight
The most interesting research on this species is not about control at all. Hoover and colleagues at the University of Colorado Denver and the University of South Dakota built an agent-based model of the organisation of societal conflicts by pavement ants, framed around amine-mediated decision making.6
Their framing is the useful part: ant colonies self-organise to solve complex problems despite the simplicity of an individual ant's brain, and pavement ant colonies must solve the problem of defending the territory they patrol in search of energetically rich forage.6 No individual ant decides to go to war. The decision emerges from thousands of local interactions, modulated by biogenic amines that shift individual aggression thresholds.
Why this matters beyond ants Pavement ants have become a model system for distributed decision-making — how a collective reaches a coherent choice with no central controller and no individual holding the whole picture. The mass battle on a Winnipeg sidewalk is an emergent computation, and it is being studied as such.
The taxonomy is still being sorted
The species-complex problem is live. Tetramorium immigrans is more widespread in North America than previously thought,2 and it hybridises with T. caespitum.3 The exact taxonomy remains tangled, and most ant resources still treat pavement ants as a complex.1 Any confident species-level claim about the ants on a Winnipeg sidewalk should be treated with some caution, including ours.
Chemical ecology, from an undergraduate class
A pleasing recent example of accessible research: students used Caenorhabditis elegans chemotaxis assays to investigate how ant compounds are detected by other species' nervous systems, finding that C. elegans avoid pavement ant extracts and that specific ion channels are required for that response. The work was conducted in an undergraduate laboratory course, demonstrating that genuine insights into interspecies interactions can come from classroom research.7
What is not known locally
There is no Manitoba-specific work on pavement ant colony density, overwintering depth under prairie frost conditions, or how freeze–thaw damage to concrete affects nest establishment. Given how universal this pest is on Winnipeg properties, that is a reasonable gap for someone to fill.
Cultural history
The immigrant in the name. Tetramorium immigrans was described by Santschi in 1927,2 and the epithet is unusually candid — an ant named for the fact that it arrived. It is native to Europe and was introduced to North America,2 almost certainly in ship ballast soil during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The most common ant on a Winnipeg sidewalk is an immigrant that came over in the bottom of a boat.
The wars as spectacle. Pavement ant battles are among the few insect behaviours that reliably stop pedestrians. They have been documented by naturalists for well over a century and remain a staple of spring nature writing — the "living oil spill" along a sidewalk edge, sometimes running for metres and lasting days.5 They are the closest thing to organised warfare visible on a residential street.
Ants as model organisms. Pavement ants sit in a long tradition of ants illuminating collective behaviour — from Aesop through E. O. Wilson's superorganism to modern swarm intelligence and the routing algorithms it inspired. The amine-mediated conflict work6 is a direct descendant of that lineage.
Everyone's first ant. For most Canadians, the first ant they consciously noticed was a pavement ant on a sidewalk crack. It is the default ant, the one in the childhood memory of a magnifying glass and a crumb. That familiarity is why they generate less alarm than almost any pest we treat — people call about them irritated rather than frightened.
The internet era. Pavement ant war footage is a small but durable YouTube genre, and every May brings a fresh round of "why are there thousands of ants fighting on my sidewalk" posts to regional groups. The answer — territorial boundary dispute, harmless, resolves itself — is one of the more satisfying things in this whole library to be able to tell someone.

Colonies and territorial war
This is a genuine eusocial colony with a queen, sterile female workers and brood. Unlike pharaoh ants there is no budding, and unlike carpenter ants there is no parent-and-satellite structure. One nest, one queen, one colony — which is why baiting works.
What pavement ants are famous for is aggression toward their own kind. Tetramorium is known for aggressive behaviour toward nest intruders and other ant species, and can often be found battling other ant individuals or entire colonies, fighting until death or injury occurs.4
These are the sidewalk wars, and they are one of the more remarkable things you can watch on a Winnipeg boulevard in May. Commonly seen in late spring and early summer, colonies pour out onto sidewalks in huge battles with neighbouring colonies.3 The fighting mass is strikingly linear, following a pavement edge, with ants gripping and pulling at one another in dense clumps. Much of the combat is ritualised — workers tug and grapple rather than immediately killing — though some individuals are genuinely killed or dismembered. Territorial disputes can run for days.5
