Squirrels in Winnipeg: one-way doors, baby season, and why you must never seal first

What we're dealing with

Three tree squirrels turn up in Winnipeg buildings, and the eastern grey squirrel accounts for most of them. Red squirrels and flying squirrels also den in structures, but eastern greys account for the majority of attic infestations in cities surrounded by wooded areas and mature tree canopy.1

Eastern grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) is primarily grey with white sides and underbelly, though some individuals are black or red. They weigh roughly one to one and a half pounds and run 15 to 21 inches long including a bushy tail usually as long as the head and body.2 Their range extends as far north as Quebec, Ontario and New Brunswick, south to Florida, and west into eastern Texas and Manitoba.2

The melanistic black form is common in this city, and it is worth saying plainly: black squirrels are not a separate species. They are grey squirrels with a colour variant, and they behave identically.

American red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) is smaller, rusty-brown, noisier and more territorial. It is native here and denies more readily in conifers, but it enters soffits and wall voids too.

The two rules that matter One: physical barriers are the only permanent way to keep squirrels out — deterrents and repellents alone will not solve a persistent problem once animals have established a den inside the building envelope.1 Two: timing around baby seasons and compliance with local regulations directly determine which removal techniques are legal and which risk orphaning dependent young.1 Never seal an entry before the structure is confirmed empty.

Life stages and baby season

Grey squirrels produce two litters a year in most of their range, and those two windows govern everything about when and how a building can be cleared.

Reproductive output varies with conditions. Research on an introduced grey squirrel population in central Italy found the population well adapted to its non-native range, undergoing two annual mating periods and experiencing high reproductive success3 — a useful reminder of how readily this species establishes when conditions suit it.

Grey squirrels do not hibernate. They remain active through a Manitoba winter, which is precisely why a warm attic is so attractive.

Entry points and denning

Squirrels are opportunistic and persistent. They rarely need to create an opening from nothing — they find a weakness and enlarge it with gnawing.

Entry points we find repeatedly on Winnipeg homes:

  • Roof-edge and fascia gaps, particularly where a wall meets a lower roof
  • Soffit joints and the corner returns where soffit meets fascia
  • Rotted or damaged trim, especially on older houses with wooden detail
  • Roof and gable vents with degraded screening

  • Gaps behind eavestroughs where fascia has pulled away

Placing steel wire mesh over ventilation openings prevents squirrels gaining access to a home and attic, and sealing the top of a chimney with wire mesh keeps them out of the flue.4

Once inside they nest in attic insulation, in soffit cavities and in wall voids, building a leafy or shredded nest and returning to it daily. Older homes — detached or attached — are particularly vulnerable, with ageing rooflines, mature tree cover and, in some cases, shared attic spaces.4

Beyond suburban and urban settings, grey squirrels prefer upland hardwood forests.2 A Winnipeg neighbourhood with mature elm and ash canopy is, functionally, upland hardwood forest with better shelter.

Social structure

Grey squirrels are not colonial, but neither are they strictly solitary. They maintain overlapping home ranges with a loose dominance hierarchy based largely on age and size, and they tolerate one another far more than red squirrels do.

Red squirrels are the opposite — fiercely territorial, defending a food cache aggressively against all comers including other red squirrels. That difference matters practically: a grey squirrel attic problem may involve several animals sharing space, whereas a red squirrel problem is usually one very determined individual.

In winter, grey squirrels will den communally for warmth, which is why an attic can hold more animals than the entry hole suggests. This is another argument against assuming a single animal and sealing after one is seen leaving.

There is no queen, no nest hierarchy and nothing central to remove. Exclusion works on individuals, one at a time, through a device that lets each animal out and none back in.

Behaviour and gnawing

Squirrels are diurnal, with peak activity at dawn and dusk. That is the diagnostic: scurrying and scratching in a ceiling at first light and again in the evening is squirrel. Activity in the middle of the night is more likely mice, rats or raccoons.

The first signs of a squirrel are strange noises as they scamper through attics and walls.5 People describe rolling sounds — that is caching, an animal moving nuts across joists.

Gnawing is continuous and physiologically necessary, as with all rodents. Squirrels damage the exterior of a house and destroy insulation in the attic, and they gnaw on anything including electrical wires and plumbing.5 Chewed wiring insulation is a documented fire risk and it is the reason we treat attic squirrel activity as urgent rather than merely annoying.

The scale of damage this species can do is well documented elsewhere. In Britain, where greys are invasive, they cause an estimated £40 million in annual damage to forestry by stripping bark from oak, beech, hornbeam and sycamore, and are also known to damage roof spaces by stripping insulation from electrical wires, contaminating water tanks and chewing woodwork.6

They also introduce health hazards by contaminating a home,5 through accumulated droppings and urine in insulation — which is why sanitation is part of a proper job rather than an upsell.

Where in Winnipeg

Squirrel pressure here maps almost perfectly onto tree canopy and building age.

  • Mature-canopy neighbourhoods — Wolseley, River Heights, Crescentwood, Norwood, Elmwood, St. Boniface. Established elm and ash provide both food and highways to the roofline. This is where the majority of our attic calls come from.
  • Older homes with wooden trim, fascia and soffit detail, where decades of freeze–thaw have opened joints. Ageing rooflines and mature tree cover are the classic combination.4
  • Properties with branches within jumping distance of the roof — roughly two metres. This is the single most modifiable risk factor on most properties.
  • River and creek corridors along the Assiniboine, Red and Seine, with continuous canopy and high squirrel density.
  • Homes with uncapped chimneys, which remain surprisingly common in older stock.4
  • Properties with bird feeders, which sustain elevated local squirrel populations year-round.

Seasonally, entry attempts peak in autumn as animals seek winter dens, and again in late winter as females look for natal sites. Calls about noise peak shortly after each.

Natural control factors

  • Predation. Hawks, owls, foxes, coyotes and domestic cats all take squirrels, particularly juveniles. Urban populations experience meaningful predation pressure but not enough to prevent attic entry.
  • Winter mortality. Substantial among juveniles in a Manitoba winter — which is exactly why a warm attic confers such an advantage and why they try so hard to get in.
  • Food availability. Mast years in oak and other nut trees drive population peaks; poor years drive dispersal and more building entry.
  • Territorial competition. Red squirrels aggressively exclude others from a cache area, which limits local density.
  • Disease. Squirrel pox and mange occur in wild populations and can cause local declines.

None of this prevents a squirrel entering your soffit. The only factor under your control is access — canopy clearance and a sealed building envelope.

DIY: what works, what backfires

The serious mistake

Sealing the hole. If young are present you have entombed them, which is inhumane and produces an odour and insect problem in your ceiling. If an adult is inside, it will chew a new hole — often into the living space.

Genuinely effective

Trim branches back from the roof. Roughly two metres of clearance removes the access route entirely. Do it in summer, and do it before you spend money on anything else.

Doesn't work

Mothballs, ammonia, ultrasonic devices, peppermint oil, bright lights and loud radios. Squirrels acclimate to odours quickly, ignore or briefly avoid ultrasonic devices before returning, and habituate to light and noise. Ammonia and mothballs in an attic also create harmful fumes for people and pets.7

Worth doing now

Cap the chimney and screen the vents. Steel wire mesh over ventilation openings and a proper chimney cap close the two easiest routes in.4 Both are permanent and neither requires a wildlife technician.

Never

Poison. It risks other animals, leaves you with a dead squirrel in a wall or attic, and does nothing to close the opening that let it in.2 There is no scenario where this is the right answer.

Useful before we arrive

Note the times you hear activity. Dawn and dusk confirms squirrel. Rapid patterning and multiple animals suggests young. It shortens the inspection considerably.

Our exclusion process

  1. Full roofline inspection. We find every entry point, not just the obvious one. Animals frequently maintain a secondary route, and sealing one while missing another achieves nothing.
  2. Determine whether dependent young are present. This is done before anything is installed or sealed. Timing around baby seasons determines which techniques are legal and which risk orphaning young.1 If a litter is present we either wait or physically remove the young with the mother.
  3. One-way exclusion door at the active entry. Animals leave under their own power and cannot return. This avoids the need to trap and relocate, which is stressful for the animal and costly for the homeowner.8
  4. Monitoring the device to confirm the structure is genuinely empty before anything is closed.
  5. Permanent sealing of all entry points with appropriate materials once the building is confirmed clear. Properly installed and maintained, one-way doors plus sealing provide a long-term solution by blocking re-entry.8
  6. Sanitation where contamination is significant, addressing droppings, urine-soaked insulation and nesting material.
  7. Follow-up to verify the exclusion held, because a determined animal will test the repair.

Why we don't relocate Relocated squirrels have poor survival prospects — dropped into unfamiliar territory with established residents, no cache and no den. Exclusion shows the animal the door rather than throwing it out,9 and it also solves the actual problem, which is the hole. Relocation leaves the hole open for the next animal.

The grey squirrel provides one of the best-known examples of competitive exclusion of a native species — the replacement of the Eurasian red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) in Great Britain, Ireland and Italy. It is listed among the IUCN's 100 World's Worst Invasive Alien Species.3

A study of the introduced population in Umbria, central Italy, examined population dynamics, growth rates and viability to understand its adaptation to a non-native range, and found the population well adapted, with two annual mating periods and high reproductive success.3 Research on invasive alien species is an explicit priority of the EU biodiversity strategy for precisely this reason.3

The perspective this gives In Winnipeg the grey squirrel is a native North American animal in something close to its natural range, doing what it has always done. In Britain and Italy the same species is a listed invasive driving a native squirrel toward local extinction. The animal in your soffit is not a villain — it is an extremely successful generalist that happens to find your building envelope indistinguishable from a hollow tree.

This is a genuine change in the trade within one professional generation, and it happens to align with what actually works: the hole is the problem, and killing an animal never closed a hole.

The Manitoba gap

Given how much of this city sits under mature canopy adjacent to older housing stock, that is a reasonable question for someone with a research budget.

Cultural history

The name is about the tail. "Squirrel" descends through Old French from Greek skiourosskia, shade, and oura, tail. The shadow-tailed animal. It is one of the more poetic etymologies among household pests, and it describes the thing everyone actually notices.

Deliberately introduced, repeatedly. Grey squirrels were introduced to Britain, Ireland and Italy in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as ornamental additions to estates and parks, and have since been introduced to Washington, British Columbia and Vancouver Island.2 One of the most consequential invasive mammal introductions in Europe began as a decorative gesture.

The feeder arms race. Few human–animal contests are as culturally embedded as the squirrel-proof bird feeder. It has generated a substantial patent literature, a genre of viral video, and a widely shared assessment among engineers that the squirrel usually wins. It is worth knowing that a feeder sustains an elevated local squirrel population regardless of who wins the individual round.

Beatrix Potter and the rehabilitation. The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin (1903) and generations of children's literature since have positioned squirrels as charming rather than destructive. That cultural warmth is genuinely useful in this trade — it is far easier to persuade a client toward humane exclusion for a squirrel than for a rat, despite the two doing comparable damage to wiring.
