Wasps and hornets in Winnipeg: the colony cycle and why August is different

A yellowjacket colony starts as one queen in a golf-ball nest and peaks at thousands of workers. The late-summer aggression everyone notices is a documented dietary shift — and understanding it explains both the timing of stings and why you must never seal the entrance.

What we're dealing with

Three groups of social wasp cause problems in Winnipeg, and they behave differently enough that identification changes the job.

Yellowjackets (Vespula spp.) are the ones responsible for most stings. Short, stout, bright yellow and black with a very narrow waist. They nest in cavities — old rodent burrows, wall voids, soffits, compost heaps — with a single entrance. Several Vespula species are scavengers, and these are the wasps at your picnic.1

Bald-faced hornet (Dolichovespula maculata) is not a true hornet but an aerial-nesting yellowjacket that lacks the yellow. Larger at roughly 16–22 mm, black and white, and it builds the grey football-shaped paper nest hanging in a tree or under an eave. Colonies reach around 800 workers.2 Aerial yellowjackets generally forage for live prey rather than scavenging, but become a nuisance in late summer seeking sweets and can be very aggressive when the nest is disturbed.2

Paper wasps (Polistes spp.) are slimmer, longer-legged, and build the small open-celled umbrella nest with no paper envelope, typically under a railing, eave or deck. Colonies are far smaller — dozens rather than thousands — and they are markedly less defensive. Many paper wasp nests do not need treatment at all, and we will say so.

Honey bees are not wasps and we do not treat them. If it is hairy, golden-brown and visiting flowers, it is a bee, and we will refer you to a beekeeper for removal.

The annual colony cycle

In this climate the colony is strictly annual. Only the fertilised queen survives winter, in diapause under bark, in leaf litter, in a rotten log or in a nook in siding. Everything else — every worker, every male — dies at the first hard frost. Next spring's nest is built from scratch, in a new place, by a different individual.

That last line matters for two reasons. First, a nest found in November is dead and needs no treatment. Second — and this is the intervention that actually reduces next year's problem — every queen that overwinters successfully is a potential colony of thousands next August. Treating a nest in July removes one nest. Treating in May removes a colony before it exists.

Nest siting

Yellowjacket queens are opportunistic about cavities. A queen will dig out or enlarge an existing opening — very commonly an abandoned rodent burrow — and build inside it.3 In a built environment that translates to:

  • Wall voids entered through a gap in siding, a failed mortar joint, or a utility penetration
  • Soffit and roofline cavities, especially where a wall meets a lower roof
  • Ground holes in lawns, along foundations, under sheds, decks and steps
  • Compost bins, woodpiles and stacked material
  • Rarely-opened items: gas meter housings, electrical boxes, unused barbecues, children's playhouses

Wall-void nests are the ones that need professional handling. A colony inside a wall that is denied its entrance does not give up — it chews toward the light and warmth on the other side, which is the interior of your home. Every year we attend jobs where a homeowner foamed a soffit gap and had wasps come through a bedroom ceiling four days later.

Aerial nests — the grey paper footballs — are built from wood fibre chewed into pulp,2 expanded outward as the colony grows. They are conspicuous, which makes them less dangerous than a hidden cavity nest: you can see where not to stand.

Social structure

Unlike cockroaches and bed bugs, this genuinely is a colony. There is one reproductive queen, a sterile female worker caste, brood in various stages, and — late in the season — reproductive males and new queens. The nest is a real structure with a real centre, and destroying the nest genuinely ends the colony.

That structure explains the defensive behaviour. Workers are sterile and their genetic interest lies entirely in the colony's reproductive output, which makes suicidal nest defence evolutionarily rational. Alarm pheromone released by a disturbed worker recruits others rapidly, which is why a single stumble into a ground nest produces multiple stings rather than one.

Critically, vespid wasps have smooth, unbarbed stingers and can sting repeatedly without injuring themselves. This is the key difference from honey bees and the reason a wasp nest near a doorway is a genuine safety problem rather than an inconvenience.

Behaviour and the August shift

The seasonal change in aggression that everyone in Winnipeg notices is not imagination and it is not weather. It is a documented dietary shift driven by the colony's own life cycle.

Through spring and midsummer the colony is in a growth phase and larvae require large amounts of protein, so workers forage mainly for insects — which makes them genuinely beneficial predators in your garden during this period. By late summer, colony growth slows or ceases and the colony requires large amounts of sugar to maintain the queen and workers, at which point foraging wasps become particularly interested in sweet things.1

Why they want your drink in August and not in June Larvae feed workers a sugary secretion in exchange for the protein workers bring them. As larval production winds down, that internal sugar supply disappears — and thousands of adult wasps have to find carbohydrate elsewhere. Your open pop can is not a nuisance behaviour; it is a colony running out of its own food supply.

Two safety consequences follow. Sweet drinks in opaque cans are the classic Manitoba sting-in-the-mouth scenario — use a clear glass or a straw at a late-summer barbecue. And swatting is counterproductive: crushing a wasp releases alarm pheromone, which recruits others. Move calmly away instead.

Wasps also forage on carrion and, occasionally, on wounds — behaviour that is well documented and startling to encounter but not dangerous in itself.

Where in Winnipeg

Wasp pressure in this city is overwhelmingly a matter of season and yard structure rather than neighbourhood. Call volume climbs from mid-July and peaks through August into early September, matching the colony cycle exactly.

Higher-pressure settings:

  • Mature tree-canopy neighbourhoods — Wolseley, River Heights, Crescentwood, Norwood and similar — where established elm and ash canopy provides abundant aerial nest siting and older housing stock provides soffit and wall-void access.
  • Properties with existing rodent activity, because abandoned burrows are prime ground-nest sites.3 A vole or mouse problem in spring is a plausible wasp problem in August.
  • River and creek corridors along the Assiniboine, Red and Seine, where undisturbed banks, deadfall and dense vegetation support high queen overwintering survival.
  • Yards with fruit trees, compost, or unsealed bins — crab apple, plum and chokecherry are common in Winnipeg yards and provide exactly the late-season sugar the colony is hunting for.
  • Patios, decks and outdoor food service across the whole city from August, where scavenging behaviour and human activity intersect.

Natural control factors

  • Winter. The dominant control by an enormous margin. The Manitoba climate kills every colony annually, and mortality among overwintering queens is very high. A mild winter with good snow insulation produces a heavier wasp year; a hard winter with poor cover produces a lighter one.
  • Spring weather. Cold, wet conditions in May kill founding queens outright while they are rearing the first brood alone with no workers to buffer failure. This period does more to determine August's wasp population than anything else.
  • Predation. Bears and skunks excavate ground nests; birds take foraging workers. Wasps themselves are significant predators of caterpillars and flies, which is a genuine ecological benefit worth weighing before treating a nest that is nowhere near people.
  • Competition and parasitism. Other Vespula queens usurp nests, and various parasitoids attack brood. Real, but not manipulable.

The honest position: if a nest is in a back corner of a large yard, away from doors, walkways and play areas, leaving it alone until frost is a legitimate choice. Wasps are useful predators through July, and the colony will be dead by November regardless. We will tell you when a nest does not need treating.

DIY: what works, what backfires

Genuinely dangerous

Sealing the entrance. The most damaging thing you can do to a wall-void or soffit nest. Trapped wasps find alternate routes, which frequently means into the living space. Never seal an active entrance — treat first, seal after the colony is dead.

Worth doing

Spring nest checks. Walk your eaves, sheds and foundation in May looking for a golf-ball nest with one wasp on it. Removing it then is trivial and prevents a colony of thousands in August.

Genuinely dangerous

Treating at midday, from a ladder. Most foragers are out, so you get partial kill and full retaliation — while balanced on a ladder. Ladder falls, not stings, are how people are seriously hurt doing this.

Worth doing

Removing the sugar. Sealed bins, cleared fallen fruit, covered drinks, clean recycling. This does not remove a nest but it substantially reduces the wasps in your immediate space in August.

Mostly theatre

Decoy paper nests. Sold on the premise that wasps avoid rivals' territory. Evidence for meaningful deterrence in real yards is weak, and queens routinely nest within metres of one.

Situationally useful

Baited traps, sited at the property edge. They catch foragers and can take pressure off a patio. Place them well away from where people sit — a trap next to the table draws wasps to the table.

If anyone in the household has a known sting allergy, do not attempt any of this. Call, and say so when you call — that changes our scheduling priority.

Our treatment process

  1. Find the nest, not just the entrance. Wasps entering a soffit gap may be nesting two metres along the cavity. Treating the hole rather than the nest gives partial kill and an agitated colony.
  2. Identify the species. A Polistes umbrella nest under a railing and a Vespula colony in a wall void are different jobs with different risk profiles — and one of them may not need treating.
  3. Treat at low activity, early morning or dusk, when the maximum number of workers is inside the nest. This is not a preference; it determines whether the treatment kills the colony or half of it.
  4. Direct application to the nest with an appropriate registered product, with proper PPE and a planned retreat path.
  5. Aerial nests removed where it is safe to do so. Wall-void nests are treated in place and left to die off — pulling a nest out of a wall cavity does more damage than leaving it.
  6. Exclusion advice once the colony is dead: which gap to seal, and when it is safe to seal it.
  7. Return visit on request if any activity persists.

The design logic is the reverse of cockroach control. There, delayed action is essential because the kill must travel through the population. Here the colony is a single physical structure with a defended entrance, so rapid knockdown at the nest is correct — and dust supplies the delayed component, killing foragers that return after the visit.

Ecology and recent thinking

The predator we ask to be removed

Through the growth phase of the colony, workers forage predominantly for protein — caterpillars, flies and other insects — to provision larvae.1 A mature yellowjacket colony removes a substantial biomass of garden pests over a season. That is genuinely useful, and it is why the correct answer to a nest depends on where it is rather than on its existence.

Invasive Vespula abroad

The most compelling wasp research is not from North America but from New Zealand, where introduced Vespula reach densities far beyond anything seen in their native range. In South Island honeydew beech forest, peak-season worker density has been estimated at roughly 10,000 workers per hectare, with Vespula biomass equalling or exceeding the combined biomass of birds, rodents and stoats in the same forest.4

The consequences are severe. Wasps crop honeydew before it can recharge, reducing the energy available in honeydew drops by more than 90% across the season and out-competing native birds such as kaka for the resource.5 Experimental manipulation of wasp density found that at peak season, large free-living caterpillars had effectively no chance of surviving to adulthood, and estimated that wasp abundance would need to be reduced by at least 88% to conserve the more vulnerable species.6

Two things follow for a Winnipeg reader. It is a striking demonstration of what these colonies do when winter and natural enemies do not constrain them — and, read the other way, of how much work a Manitoba winter does for us every single year, for free.

Where the real risk sits

Vespid stings are among the common causes of insect-sting allergic reactions. The clinically important distinction is between a large local reaction — extensive swelling around the sting site, uncomfortable but not dangerous — and a systemic reaction involving hives away from the sting site, breathing difficulty, or faintness, which is a medical emergency. Anyone with a known systemic reaction should carry epinephrine through August and September and should not be anywhere near nest treatment.

Colony longevity

In mild climates some yellowjacket colonies survive multiple seasons and become extremely large.1 This does not occur in Manitoba — our winters guarantee the annual cycle. It is worth knowing mainly because a great deal of online wasp advice is written for climates where the assumption does not hold.

Cultural history

Paper before paper. Vespid wasps build their nests from wood fibre chewed with saliva into a pulp2 — functionally, paper. The observation that wasps were making paper from wood long before humans did is frequently repeated in accounts of the invention of wood-pulp paper in the 18th century, and the resemblance is genuine.

The hornet as martial symbol. Wasps and hornets have carried military connotations across cultures — swift, coordinated, disproportionately punishing. "Stirring up a hornet's nest" is attested in English for centuries and remains one of the most durable metaphors for provoking a collective response.

Yellowjackets, 2021. The Showtime series took the wasp as a metaphor for a group turning collectively feral, which is a reasonable read of colony defence behaviour and did more for the name's recognition than any entomology outreach ever managed.

The murder hornet cycle, 2020. The arrival of a small number of Vespa mandarinia in the Pacific Northwest produced a media event out of proportion to the actual risk, and generated a wave of misidentification across the continent — including calls in Manitoba, thousands of kilometres from any confirmed sighting. Almost every "murder hornet" reported here was a bald-faced hornet or a European hornet lookalike. It is a useful reminder that identification, not alarm, is the first step.

The lasting Winnipeg version. Everyone here has a story about a nest in a soffit, a lawnmower run over a ground nest, or a can of pop at a late-August barbecue. The last one is the most common way people in this city get stung, and it is entirely explained by the colony's dietary shift.
